Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s celebrated rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar will be resurrected for an Australian tour and is set for a season at Crown Theatre Perth in February 2025.

Following the series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ, as seen through the eyes of Judas, Jesus Christ Superstar is regarded to reflect the rock roots that defined a generation.

The original London production ran for more than eight years — becoming the longest-running musical in West End history at that time — and has since been reproduced regularly around the world.

International recording artist Michael Paynter will take on the title role of Jesus, known for being a member of classic Aussie band Icehouse and as guitarist and vocalist in Jimmy Barnes’ band.

Paynter has also toured with artists including 5 Seconds of Summer, Miley Cyrus, The Script and John Farnham, who performed the role of Jesus in the 1992 sold-out Australian tour of Jesus Christ Superstar alongside Jon Stevens, Kate Ceberano, Angry Anderson, Russell Morris and John Waters.

Javon King, most recently seen as Seaweed J. Stubbs in the Australian tour of Hairspray, will play Judas, while powerhouse soul and blues vocalist Mahalia Barnes (daughter of Jimmy Barnes) will make her stage role debut as Mary Magdalene.

Lead singer of band Mahalia Barnes and The Soul Mates, her outstanding vocal prowess makes for an exciting casting as Magdalene.

“I am delighted that Michael, Javon and Mahalia are joining the cast of this award-winning production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar,” producer John Frost said.

“Superstar is a loved and cherished rock opera, and they are all extraordinary singers and musicians who will bring their unique experience and talent to these roles. I’m so looking forward to hearing them singing in rehearsals those classic songs like Heaven On Their Minds, What’s the Buzz and I Don’t Know How To Love Him.”

Jesus Christ Superstar is at Crown Theatre Perth from February 2025.
