Genesis GV60 concept is an over-the-top Korean rescue machine

Genesis has unveiled a new purpose-built electric vehicle (EV) concept, designed to be able to assist in challenging rescue operations while prioritising safety and functionality.

Based on the Korean brand’s GV60 electric SUV, the Mountain Intervention Vehicle (MIV) concept was designed to be capable of “rescue support tasks in rugged terrains and challenging weather conditions”, with a range of modifications and enhancements to make sure it’s up to the task.

Utilising accessories that were “meticulously chosen based on their quality and durability”, the GV60 MIV features sport seats, medical supplies, and emergency communication and warning systems to be able to support in mountain rescues.

Its headlining modification is the addition of large tank-style tracks instead of wheels, which should – in theory – provide superior grip on snow and minimise the risk of getting stuck.

According to Genesis, the GV60 MIV is”designed for exceptional off-road performance”, with its electric powertrain allowing for silent operation to alleviate the impact of noise pollution – therefore minimising its impact on the environment.

This also means it features a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function which can supply power to auxiliary devices.

For added storage, Genesis has installed a custom heavy duty roof rack and a rack on the rear hatch has been fitted with various modular attachment points for various equipment.

Fitted to the sides of the GV60 MIV are large carbon fibre fender flares, intended to protect bystanders and occupants from the tank tracks, while shielding the vehicle from damage.

It’s unclear which GV60 powertrain underpins the MIV, as the Australian-delivered EV is offered in two outputs: 234kW and 605Nm, or 360kW and 700Nm. Both are powered by a 77.4kWh lithium-ion battery.

The GV60 MIV concept was revealed at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, marking the third time the Korean brand has showcased a concept vehicle at the event. Previous concepts comprise the Genesis X Concept in 2023, and the Genesis X Snow Speedium Concept in 2024.

Genesis says the purpose-built EV was inspired by previous small unit support vehicles (SUSVs), which may include vehicles like the Swedish-developed Bandvagn 206 – a track-driven carrier and support vehicle that has seen widespread use in many international military and civil operations.

It was originally developed for the Swedish army in the 1970s, though it has been used around the world by various non-military organisations including Australia’s New South Wales Ambulance and the New Zealand Antarctic Research Program.

Fans of The Grand Tour will also recognise the use of tank tracks on a passenger vehicle, albeit for less noble endeavours.

As part of the customary modifications made to the three vehicles featured in the season four special ‘A Massive Hunt‘, Richard Hammond removed the wheels from a Ford Focus RS in favour of tank tracks – which later became dislodged countless times as the trio navigated Madagascar’s muddy roads.
