GSFLW 2025: Denmark-Walpole top ladder, Bulls 78-point victory, and Sharks win by a single point
The 2025 Great Southern Football League Women’s competition kicked off on Saturday with the six teams going head-to-head at Albany’s Keep the Sheep Stadium.
Marking the first match of the 2025 GSFLW season was a close game between Royals and Albany with the Sharks winning by a single point.
The Lions had a strong start in the first half of the game, leading by seven points, but were overtaken by the Sharks in the second half as Talia Coyne kicked two goals in the third quarter.
Winning their first game of the season has landed the Sharks second on the ladder while the Lion’s sit in fourth.
Mt Barker finished their first game with an astonishing 78 points against Railways’ zero, with the reigning premiers showing no signs of complacency after their 2024 win.
Libby Morris, Mikayla Balloch and Kaitlin Eades each scored two goals for the Bulls.
With the win against the Tigers, the Bulls have landed in third place on the ladder, while the Tigers are placed sixth.
North Albany made a valiant effort against Denmark-Walpole in the second quarter on Saturday, with Lucy Barnett kicking the team’s only goal.
But it wasn’t enough to combat the Pies’ domination, ending the game with five goals kicked.
The Pies have topped the ladder for the start of the season with their 32-point win, pushing the Kanga’s to fifth.
The Kangas and Lions will face-off against each other in round two of the season on Friday at Collingwood Park at 6pm, followed by the Tigers and Sharks at 7.45pm.
The Pies and Bulls will kick off at 6.45pm at McLean Park.
