A swag of rising Great Southern hockey players represented WA Country at the 2024 KMSB Youth International Gryphon Cup under-16 tournament in Perth recently.

Squaring off against international teams, Lower Great Southern Hockey Association’s Stella Gordon, Zoe Mills, Bella Post, John Righton, Mitch Pike, Sam Graham, Charlie Letter, Jethro Wright, J.P Swart and Sorren Humphries represented the Outback Girls and Outback Boys sides.

Samantha Armstrong, Connie Ballard, Zaria Francis Luca Collette, Dylan Mulcahy and Oliver Batt from the Upper Great Southern Hockey Association were also selected.

The regional teams were picked after trials were held around the State to select the best regional-based players for the Outback sides.

The tournament, held between November 21-24, attracted national youth teams from Japan, Singapore and Malaysia and provided the opportunity for younger regional players to experience elite hockey at an international level.

Tambellup-raised Hockeyroo and Perth Thundersticks Hockey One premiership captain Penny Squibb coached the girls side.

The Outback Girls finished eighth with two wins from their seven games and LGSHA’s Gordon and Mills each scored a goal.

The Outback Boys endured a tougher tournament, finishing 10th after winning their play -off spot against Suns 2-0, with Wright scoring a goal.
