Campbell Quartermaine: Former bikie prospect jailed for luring rival gang member to Kings Park hammer attack

A bikie prospect who lured a rival gang member to Kings Park where he was attacked with a hammer has been handed a substantial jail term. Campbell Sydney Quartermaine was a nominee for the Rock City chapter of the Mongols in May last year when he began sending the victim messages pretending to be a woman named Sash. The 31-year-old gave the impression the fictional female wanted to meet for a casual sexual encounter. And 11 days later, the rendezvous was arranged. But when the victim arrived, Quartermaine’s unidentified associate ran towards the the man, armed with a hammer and causing him to flee. The co-offender then jumped on an electric scooter, chased the man down and struck him to the head multiple times, bashing him unconscious. Shocked witnesses called authorities and the man was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital suffering horrific injuries including bleeding on the brain and a depressed skull fracture. He’s been left with a serious and likely ongoing vision impairment in his right eye, Quartermaine’s District Court of WA sentencing was told. Judge Seamus Rafferty said the attack involved significant planning, including bringing the e-scooter, but Quartermaine was not aware of the hammer. The court was told the co-offender was the one who had a beef with the victim — “something to do with a girl,” Judge Rafferty said — and had somewhat pressured Quartermaine to take part in the plot. While it was “short of duress”, there was no doubt Quartermaine also viewed the victim as “a f...ing bastard” for “talking s...”, as he told police in his recorded interview. Judge Rafferty said he understood why the co-offender’s identity remained undisclosed. “There would, no doubt, be consequences if you were to do that,” he said. Judge Rafferty sentenced Quartermaine to three years and two months behind bars. The fact he was on bail for an unrelated crime was an aggravating factor, the judge said, adding the term would have been “much more significant” had it been “OMCG-motivated activity”. Quartermaine’s defence lawyer Luka Margaretic told the court his client had broken ties with bikies. Judge Rafferty questioned why someone brought up by “good, decent, honest country folk” who had worked in the mining industry and for a soil analysis company as a field technician had become involved with them the first place. “It’s no life because it will, ultimately, lead to you going to jail for a very, very long time,” he said. Quartermaine’s glamorous girlfriend Cinque Crimson Brothers was charged as part of the investigation that followed the attack and put behind bars after being denied bail. But the charges against her were withdrawn and she was freed after Quartermaine cut a plea deal. Quartermaine will eligible for parole after serving 19 months.
