The Kalgoorlie Miner’s top sporting moments in photographs for 2024
Sport is often referred to as the glue that holds the Goldfields together.
Throughout 2024, the Kalgoorlie Miner’s photographers were on the sidelines to share the biggest moments of our local sporting talent.
From the boundaries of the football oval, cricket ground, basketball court, or desert race track, here’s some of our favourite photographs.
Part two will be published in next Saturday’s paper.
1. That winning feeling
Sir Richard Moore Sports Centre was the scene of unadulterated joy for Mines Rovers’ women’s team after their hard-fought Goldfields Football League grand final victory in September.
Mines Rovers’ faced up against Railways, who were in their third grand final in a row.
Mines Rovers prevailed 3.0 (18) to 1.4 (10) to secure their maiden GFLW flag under coach Quinny Matla, pictured celebrating with his team.
2. Desert treble
Hard work paid off for offroad motorcycle legend Ben Grabham, who won his third consecutive Black Diamond Drilling Kalgoorlie Desert Race title in October.
A professional rider for close to 30 years, the two-time defending champion dominated all weekend and recorded a time of 3 hours 31 minutes and 20 seconds across three laps of the gruelling 121km KDR circuit.
He is pictured performing a celebratory burnout alongside rivals Brodie Waters, who was runner-up, and Luke Hayes, who came in third.
3. Giant effort
Goldfields Giants toppled the visiting Perth Redbacks 90-83 in May which took the Giants’ win-loss record to 3-4 and put them in ninth place in the 14-team standings.

The squad went on to play in the NBL1 semifinal, but were defeated by Mandurah Magic 110-93.
4. Bowled over
Veterans’ Brett Royle got bowled by Sunrisers’ Ravi Chandra Busi during round 10n of the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Cricket Association’s 2024-25 season.
Sunrisers achieved a seven-wicket victory over Veterans after winning the toss and putting them into bat at Shepherdson Park.
5. Flying high
From sprints to long jump, shot put to discus throw, the Eastern Goldfields Little Athletics Centre has a range of disciplines for young Goldfielders enjoy.
Hundreds of youngsters are at the Oasis Playing Fields every Friday evening to build their skills and compete against personal-best records.

6. Stevens stands tall
Mines Rovers’ Jett Stevens leaps above Kambalda’s Kaia Church during round 12 of the 2024 Goldfields Football League. Railways won September’s league grand final.
