Off-duty cop repeatedly kicked in the head, rushed to hospital after assault in Newtown, Sydney
An off-duty police officer was left fighting for life after he was allegedly knocked to the ground and beaten in a horror assault in Sydney’s inner west.
He was with another off-duty officer when they was targeted on Enmore Rd in Newtown at about 11pm on Wednesday, police allege.
Investigators have been told the pair approached three unknown men who were arguing with each other.
“The two off-duty officers were assaulted with one of them knocked to the ground and repeatedly punched and kicked to the head,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.
The 25-year-old was found unconscious on the road, with an off-duty nurse rushing to perform CPR while waiting for paramedics to arrive.
The man suffered head injuries and was treated at the scene before being rushed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.
A NSW Ambulance spokesman said earlier on Thursday that there appeared to have been “a big punch-up” leaving the man with “quite a serious” head injury.
The man remained in hospital as of Thursday morning in a serious but stable condition.
The second off-duty cop, also aged 25, was taken to hospital with facial injuries but has since been released.
The three unknown men reportedly ran from the scene before police arrived.
The first man was described as being of Maori/Pacific Islander appearance and between 20 and 30 years old with short, curly black hair.
He was wearing a white T-shirt and dark blue jeans.
The second man was described as of caucasian appearance in the same age range as the first man, and was wearing a tan vest and cargo pants with black sneakers.
The third man, also described as being aged between 20 and 30, appeared to be of Maori or Pacific Islander appearance with long, brown curly hair.
He was described as wearing a long-sleeve black striple flannelette shirt, grey trackpants and black slides.
Police are hoping to identify the three men.
A crime scene was established and an investigation was launched.
Anyone with information has been urged to come forward.
