Work on the Bridgetown Family and Community Centre mural started on Monday, with everyone invited along to help with the painting.

The design to be painted is one of three created by local artist Alicia Rogerson, and chosen by a public vote.

The centre will run painting sessions until next Thursday, with Mrs Rogerson creating the artwork so even novice painters can be involved from the start of the mural.

“It is wonderful and I’m trying to get people involved from the get-go, rather than coming in at the end and doing a couple of bits,” artist Alicia Rogerson said. “I’m going to do colour by numbers, so I’m going to grid it all out and do all the black lines and then write all the numbers and then people can pick a colour and paint a bit.

“Anyone can paint, even if they don’t know how to paint.”

The winning design was the magpie mural with 62 per cent of the votes.

“My first choice was the cockatoos to be honest, but I’m pretty happy with the choice of the magpies because they are part of the BFCC family,” centre manager Jo Moore said.

“We have families of magpies here so it’s very fitting.

“They come and have morning tea with the kids at playgroup now, so they are very tame.”

Mrs Rogerson said the magpie was the last design that she created.

“I tried to feature some endangered animals, but everyone was drawn to the common, everyday magpie,” she said.

“Everyone has stories about the the magpies being part of the centre, visiting them at playgroup and seeing them.”
