Kearnan College Year 7 students raised about $1000 for St Vincent de Paul last week through their market stalls selling recycled items.

Some items sold included baked goods with recycled packaging, potted plants and a variety of Christmas ornaments.

Teachers Elle Smithin and Jodie Lapinski organised the event after studying the importance of recycling and the environment in their cross-curricular English and humanities and social sciences class.

“This is the first time we have done an event like this at the school,” Mrs Lapinski said.

“We really want to do this again next year too, because the students have had so much fun.”

Mrs Smithin said the students had all done an amazing job and she was incredibly proud of their efforts.

Most of the stalls were manned by the Year 7 students, while one stall sold beeswax wraps manned by younger students.

“This stall is full of work done by some of the younger students in their lunchtimes,” Mrs Smithin said.

School principal Jason Meynell said the money raised would be exchanged for 50 $20 Coles gift cards, which St Vincent could give to those in need over the Christmas period.
