Tune has message

Bridgetown GP Dr Jonathan Morling has picked up his musical instruments to perform a parody song with a COVID-19 public health message.

His parody of the song I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor features lyrics about social distancing and remaining at home.

Dr Morling said he was inspired to do his own video by others that he had seen online.

“There has been some really good ones that I’ve seen online,” he said.

“There is a primary school teacher in America who has done a COVID parody song about teachers preparing to work online and he did that to the tune of I Will Survive as well.

“I just thought it could be modified to be a message from health workers to our local community.”

He reinforced that self isolation and social distancing is for the good of the community and not just individuals.

“It’s for the whole town and I think that is a strength of Bridgetown, we’ve got a fairly strong identity as a town that cares for each other and thinks communally rather than individualistically, which I think is a real strength of this town,” he said.

“The song is to remind people that that’s the way we need to think at the moment and perhaps make some small individual sacrifices for the sake of keeping the whole town safe, specifically for the older people and the medically at risk people.”
