Sydney has been smashed by wild winds on Friday as other parts of Australia prepare for chaotic weather

Wild winds have caused havoc across Sydney, with a church being smashed after a massive gum tree was uprooted and people were hit by a falling tree in the city on Friday. One person was injured after a corrugated metal roof was blown off a shop and onto one of the city’s busiest roads, while trains were delayed after debris hit tracks. Multiple cars were trapped underneath the roof, causing closures on Victoria Road in Drummoyne during peak hour on Friday afternoon. One person was treated for minor injuries, emergency services responded to the scene at about 5pm on Friday. Local residents said the “crazy weather” was “causing havoc”. Two peoplewere trapped underneath a massive tree that was felled in Hyde Park in Sydney’s CBD. NSW Ambulance paramedics have taken one person to St Vincent’s Hospital with minor injuries, while the second person was treated at the scene. The wild winds that smashed Sydney on Friday afternoon also caused chaos on the city’s train lines and huge surf off the city’s beaches. A tree fell onto tracks at St Peters in inner Sydney, blocking the Eastern Suburbs and Illawara Line and leading to the cancellation of train services. Transport for NSW has urged commuters to consider using the Metro or bus services where possibly, warning of delays because of other storm-related disruptions. Several roads were also closed as winds knocked down trees and power lines. The wild windstorms follow days of severe weather which left at least one person dead after savage storms on Wednesday night. The Bureau of Meteorology earlier warned of damaging winds in the Sydney metropolitan area. Already, trees have fallen on the Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra line in recent hours, disrupting services, Another tree fell on power lines and caused a gas leak in West Pymble. NSW Fire and Rescue have said they are responding to multiple jobs in the wild conditions. On Wednesday, wild thunderstorms swept across NSW, leaving a man dead after a tree fell on his car in Cowra and damaging properties and crops. More than 70,000 lightning strikes were recorded across Sydney during Wednesday’s storm. Damaging winds have hit the Sydney region. While the initial tropical cyclone is set to disappear by Saturday, the bureau said there was a 70 per cent chance the 11U would develop into a tropical cyclone. “There is a chance that gales may develop in offshore waters from the Pilbara coast as 11U intensifies during Sunday,” a statement from the bureau read. “We’re not there yet,” a Bureau of Meteorology spokesperson told NewsWire. However, as the cyclone tracks closer to land, the bureau said it “might be close enough to cause impact on the coastal areas”. Even if the cyclone fails to develop and hit the coast, the bureau warned of dangerously strong winds and a barrage of rain still likely to impact the northwest coast, smashing. Strong showers and winds are expected in the Pilbara region on Friday, with a possible thunderstorm in the afternoon. Residents in Western Australia are urged to track the cyclone’s development and any emerging warnings n the BOM website. The storm continued to smash the state, with pockets of northern NSW hit by enormous hailstones and damaging winds. While the brunt of the storm has since moved out to sea, a low pressure system has developed in the northern Hunter and southern Mid-North regions, which will bring plenty of heavy rain and further dangerous conditions on Friday before moving upwards towards Queensland into the weekend. “Plenty of wet weather to come,” Sky News meteorologist Rob Sharpe said. Adelaide will be sunny with light winds becoming west to south-westerly and a top of 31C. It will be a wet and windy morning for Perth, with a very high chance of showers and a thunderstorm in the morning before clearing in the afternoon and reaching a top of 27C. Residents in Hobart can expect a partly cloudy day and a maximum temperature of 20C. It will be a sunny day for Canberra, with a top of 24C. Darwin will be hot and cloudy with a high chance of showers and a thunderstorm, reaching a to of 31C.
