Nathan James Penny: Narrogin man gets 10-month suspended prison term and $3525 fine for string of burglaries

A 22-year-old who committed a string of burglaries and car thefts in the Wheatbelt has been given a 10-month suspended prison sentence and ordered to pay more than $5000 in fines and court costs. Nathan James Penny appeared in Narrogin Magistrates Court on November 19 charged with aggravated burglary, stealing a motor vehicle, no authority to drive, stealing, trespassing, and driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or above. Penny pleaded guilty to all 12 charges and was convicted of six on January 23, five on June 30, and the final one during this appearance. Between 8.30pm and 10am on May 19 and 20, Penny and a co-accused shattered a car window and stole the stereo and some coins. DNA testing identified the pair two weeks later and the stereo was returned. On May 30, Penny broke into a Toyota Land Cruiser while trespassing at the Narrogin Motel carpark and stole a Swiss army knife, a Bowie knife, and keys before entering the back of the property and disconnecting the security cameras at 2.22am. Penny kept his head down while prosecutor Sgt Phil Milne detailed his 2023 offences for the court. On November 5, Penny was part of a group that broke into Narrogin’s New Cornwall Hotel, smashing plates in the beer garden and taking $1500 worth of alcohol before leaving the scene in a stolen vehicle. On November 7, Penny and a co-offender stole a vehicle from a Bunbury Street property. Sgt Milne said Penny’s accomplice took the keys and told Penny to “take the car.” An unlicensed Penny drove the co-offender home and picked up two friends before arriving at Ampol Foodary Williams at 11.40pm, when the trio smashed a front window and stole the empty cash register. Penny then smashed the side door and rummaged through the office drawers before all three fled in the stolen vehicle. Sgt Milne said at 12.45am, a serious crash was reported to emergency services when Penny hit the safety barrier on Forest Highway in Brunswick and the two passengers and Penny were rushed to Bunbury Hospital via ambulance. At the hospital Penny gave readings 0.085g of alcohol and 0.6g of methamphetamine in his system. Sgt Milne said Penny’s hospitalisation “was no one’s fault but his own”. Magistrate Erin O’Donnell sentenced Penny to 10 months jail, suspended for 10 months, and ordered him to pay $3525 in fines and $1682.22 in costs.
