A new hangout for Bridgetown men looking to socialise in the community has opened with Blokes, Beer and Bocce helping locals unwind in a relaxed setting.

Bridgetown Hub centre manager Jenni Oliver said the relaxed monthly meetups are for guys to get together and hangout.

“We’ve had the guys say they really enjoy it as it’s something different to do — it’s not just going to the pub or going to play sport,” she said.

“It’s a free event for any guy or anyone who identifies as male to come along to hang out.

“We’ve had a number of guys come to multiple events with a huge range of ages. We’ve had guys in their 30s all the way up to the 70s — and they’ve been really fun.”

Once a month on Thursdays, the Bridgetown Hub holds the men’s social night from 5pm to 7pm.

The centre provides free snacks, a barbecue and a few light beers, and a bocce set. During the winter months, the hangout will move indoors with a new game.

The space evolved after the community centre became aware of the limited social options for men to hangout in Bridgetown.

“We find we don’t get a lot of guys coming to the centre, but there are guys that want to connect and do different activities,” Ms Oliver said.

“(The men said) ‘give us some food and some drinks, and guys will come along’ — that’s how it came about.

“It’s a relaxed way for people to hang out together.”

The sessions have run four times this year with half a dozen men showing up for a game, a sausage and light beer.

“Basically, they run it themselves,”Ms Oliver said.

They organise the games and take it very seriously some weeks and some weeks they don’t.”
