A shark warning has been issued for the Kalbarri coast where an injured whale is attracting the predators.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development issued the warning for the Kalbarri coast after the whale was spotted at popular surf break Jakes Corner about 9.28am on Tuesday.

The department said the whale was attracting sharks and it was possible they could come nearer the shore along the Shire of Northampton coast.

It said anyone using the stretch of ocean should exercise caution.

DPIRD officers and staff from other agencies were monitoring the situation and would provide any relevant alerts.

The beach at Jakes Corner has been closed. It is not known when it will be reopened.

What to do:

Take additional caution in the Kalbarri area.

Adhere to beach closures advised by rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers, and Surf Life Saving WA.

Use your sea sense and stay informed by checking for shark activity on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app or Surf Life Saving WA’s X feed.

If you see a shark, call Water Police on 9442 8600.
