Victorian import Captain Pluto shapes up for WA success with champion jockey William Pike on board

Star jockey William Pike will ride $1.5 million Railway Stakes favourite Alsephina when she launches her spring campaign for co-trainers Grant and Alana Williams in Saturday’s Asian Beau Stakes at Ascot. Pike’s booking was confirmed after he delivered the Williams stable another carnival prospect by booting Victorian import Captain Pluto to an impressive win at Monday’s Lark Hill barrier trials. Alspehina has won at nine of 11 starts and on Saturday will chase her seventh straight victory. “We couldn’t be happier with Alsephina ahead of an Asian Beau start,” Grant Williams said on Monday. “She’s going extra well and William will ride her.” Ladbrokes has installed Alsephina at $5 favouritism for the Railway Stakes (1600m) on November 25. She is also prominent on markets for the $1.5 million Northerly Stakes (1800m) and $1.5 million Damien Oliver Gold Rush (1400m) in December. Alspehina has not raced since last summer, but was solidly conditioned in three recent barrier trials. The $200,000 Asian Beau Stakes winner will be exempt from a Railway Stakes ballot. Williams is also delighted with new arrival Captain Pluto, who finished powerfully from fourth position in Monday’s 950m fifth trial and he should be hard to beat at his WA race debut. “He showed sharp improvement today,” Williams said. “A recent trial brought him forward. He’s ready to race and we’ll now find a suitable event for him.” Captain Pluto, by top New Zealand sire Savabeel, has started in strong company and he won twice on Victorian tracks. Meanwhile, WA-born legend Damien Oliver remains optimistic he can fulfil a dream to ride one last Melbourne Cup winner. Oliver, 51, to retire after riding at the Ascot carnival in November and December, will be aboard the Mike Moroney-trained Alenquer in Tuesday week’s $8.5 million cup. He has won Australia’s most iconic race on Doriemus (1995), Media Puzzle (2002) and Fiorente (2013), in addition to setting an Australian jockeys’ record with 129 Group 1 victories. “It would be amazing to win four cups,” Oliver said on Monday. “It’s hard enough to win one. “Alenquer has a good trainer who knows how to win a Melbourne Cup. “The horse is finding form at the right time.” Six-year-old Alenquer has firmed from $101 to $41 to since Oliver’s booking. “You have to go into these races thinking you’ve got a chance,” Oliver said. Oliver was pleased with Alenquer’s effort when he rode him to finish ninth in last Friday night’s Moonee Valley Gold Cup. “It was a great run,” the hoop said. “In a muddling run race, he went to the line full of running.” Oliver said he had also been engaged for mounts on Mercante (Victoria Derby) and Basilinna (VRC Oaks). “Mercante is not without a chance,” Oliver said. “I think he’ll run the distance. “Basilinna has been running on well and is a good chance in the Oaks.” Handicappers announced on Monday they had penalised Clevleland by 0.5kg in the Melbourne Cup, for his Moonee Valley Cup win. Cleveland’s owner Lloyd Williams has been in ownership of seven Melbourne Cup winners. When third acceptors for the Melbourne Cup were taken on Monday, 32 horses remained in contention for the 24 safety limit. Horses on the borderline for starts included Ladies Man, Athabascan, United Nations, Hasta La War and Interpretation. Hasta La War and Interpretation will seek elevation in order of entry to gain a Melbourne Cup by recording a win in Wednesday’s Bendigo Cup. Connections named riders on Monday for most horses guaranteed Melbourne Cup starts.
