Alex de Minaur has cruised into the third round of the Australian Open with a comprehensive victory over American qualifier Tristan Boyer on Thursday.

The Aussie dropped his opening service game to trail 2-0, but then reeled off the next eight games en route to the dominant 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 victory.

Boyer, who was making his grand slam debut at Melbourne Park, showed flashes of his undeniable talent, but didn’t display enough consistency to ultimately challenge de Minaur.

De Minaur crushed 24 winners, including a brilliant forehand to win the match, compared to just 15 unforced errors in the brilliant performance.

Revered for his lightning speed, de Minaur showcased his vastly improved service game and net play in another super impressive display on Rod Laver Arena.

Boyer was competing at Melbourne Park just days after learning his father had been forced to evacuate his home due to the devastating fires in California.

De Minaur was quick to pay tribute to his opponent after the match.

“My deepest condolences to everyone affected by the fires in California. It is something you never want to see,” he said in his on-court interview.

“I am sending lots of love all the way there and hopefully these bad times will pass by sooner rather than later.”

Boyer shared details of his father’s plight after his first-round win.

“My dad had to evacuate our house,” Boyer said.

“Luckily it’s OK, but we have friends and family who are homeless. It’s really, really devastating to see.”

De Minaur will play 31st seed Francisco in Cerundolo in the third round with top seed and defending champion Jannik Sinner looming large in the quarter-finals.

“I’ll be ready for a battle,” he said.

“It will be tough. He is a quality opponent, lots of firepower, great forehand.

“He has taken some big scalps and hopefully I am not the next one.”
