Geraldton family thankful for community kindness after elderly man’s scooter batteries & charger taken

A Geraldton family says they are humbled by the kindness of the community, after an elderly man’s mobility scooter broke down and then had parts stolen. Tony Moor, 84, has Alzheimer’s and uses a mobility scooter to get around and take his dog for a walk and see the ocean. On Friday, December 27, Mr Moor’s vehicle broke down in Mt Tarcoola next to vacant bushland on Sydney Street, near Highbury Street. The family was able to collect him, and had organised means to get the gopher home, but Mr Moor’s daughter Fi Geary said parts were stolen from the vehicle when it was left unattended. “While we were waiting to transport his gopher home, we checked twice on the gopher and the third time we went to collect the gopher, the batteries and charger and been stolen,” she said. The items taken would cost hundreds of dollars to replace. The incident was reported to police, and a post was put up on various Facebook groups, drawing frustration within the community. However, members of the public reached out to help, including one man who offered to replace the batteries at his own expense. Ms Geary said despite a frustrating situation, she was glad to see the positive response from the community. “We are very humbled and extremely grateful for his gesture, and these kid acts from total strangers help restore my faith in our community,” she said.
